Control chart trends

trend control chart: Quality control chart which displays the deviation of the subgroup average from an expected trend in the process level. This information is then used to evaluate the stability of the process.

Control Chart vs a Run Chart. A run chart can reveal shifts and trends, but not points out of control (A run chart does not have control limits; therefore, it cannot detect out of control conditions.) You can turn a run chart into a control chart by adding upper and lower control limits. Control Limits. Control limits are the voice of the process (different from specification limits, which are Control Charts – Qualitative Trending • Qualitative (presence/absence) analyses do not need to have control charts for charting QC; however, the laboratory’s QMS may require this • Qualitative analyses do need to be evaluated for trending. This can be done using control charts Control limits (± 1, 2, 3 sigma) are calculated from the data. Zones represent the space between the limits. Control chart rules are then applied to data points as they move through those zones.; Unstable points and trends are identified for investigation. The control chart is a graph used to study how a process changes over time. Data are plotted in time order. A control chart always has a central line for the average, an upper line for the upper control limit, and a lower line for the lower control limit. These lines are determined from historical data. By comparing current data to these lines

A trend has been formed (e.g. 6 consecutive points forming an increasing or decreasing trend) To put it another way, a Control Chart is a Run Chart with 4 line indicating the limits added (upper/lower specification limits and upper/lower control limits) (plus optional a line indicating the mean of all data). •A Shewhart control chart constructed according to the Figure given above can be applied as: –Mean control chart, preferably, for recognition of the precision or trends of an analytical method. –Blank control chart, for control of reagents and measurement instruments. Note that blank control charts include not analytical results but (R 2-12) WHA Quality Data TREND - If there is a continued rise or fall in a series of points (like an upward or downward slant) it is considered a "trend" and usually indicates a process is drifting out of control. This usually requires a machine adjustment. When you look at the trend control chart, it appears to be in statistical control. The usual out of control tests apply to the trend control chart – points beyond the limits, zones tests, etc. You can now use the trend control chart to predict, within a range, what the deviation in the global temperature will be in 2016. UCL = 103.4 Run chart will indicate special cause existence by way of Trend , osciallation, mixture and cluster (indicated by p value) in the data.Once run chart confirms process stability ,control charts may be leveraged to spot random cause variations and take necessary control measures.
